Dental Prosthetics: Restoring Function and Aesthetics
Dental prosthetics is a specialised branch of dentistry dedicated to restoring the function and appearance of missing teeth. Whether through dental crowns, bridges, or removable dentures, this field plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and harmonious smile.
PREMIUM DENTAL CROWNS ON PIVOT OR IMPLANT
A dental crown is a cap that replaces the visible part of a damaged, devitalised (due to decay or nerve loss), or fractured tooth. It can be cemented onto a dental pivot or screwed onto a dental implant, which also replaces the root of the missing tooth. The primary function of a dental crown is to strengthen the tooth’s structure while restoring its natural aesthetics.
MATERIALS USED FOR DENTAL CROWNS
Over the past century, ceramics have remained the preferred material for dental crowns. Since the 1950s, the introduction of a metal layer beneath the ceramic structure has enhanced durability. Until recently, metal-ceramic crowns were the most widely used, varying in metal alloy composition.
Metal-Ceramic Crown
This type of crown features a metal core covered with a ceramic outer layer. Thanks to its metal framework, it offers high durability. However, gum recession over time may expose the metal at the gum line, making it more suitable for back teeth.
Zirconia-Ceramic or Full Zirconia Crown
Zirconia-ceramic crowns consist of a zirconia base with a ceramic outer layer. Zirconia is a highly durable, biocompatible, hypoallergenic material that mimics natural teeth perfectly, providing exceptional aesthetics.
Full Ceramic Crown
These crowns are made entirely of ceramic (porcelain) and do not create a visible margin between the crown and the gum line, unlike metal-ceramic crowns. They are semi-transparent, smooth, and replicate the natural appearance of teeth. Ideal for replacing front teeth, ceramic crowns are highly biocompatible, non-allergenic, and do not irritate the gums.
TREATMENT STEPS FOR DENTAL CROWNS
Personalised evaluation and diagnosis
Tooth preparation (devitalisation, reshaping)
Digital scanning for a perfect fit
Crown fabrication in the laboratory
Crown placement
METAL-CERAMIC OR ZIRCONIA DENTAL BRIDGE
A dental bridge consists of multiple crowns or artificial teeth supported by natural teeth on either side of a gap. It is recommended for replacing at least one missing tooth, as gaps can cause adjacent teeth to shift or tilt. Bridges are typically made from ceramic materials to blend seamlessly with natural teeth.
TYPES OF DENTAL BRIDGES
Traditional Dental Bridge
This bridge replaces one or two missing teeth with an artificial prosthesis supported by two crowns cemented onto adjacent natural teeth. The neighbouring teeth are reshaped to accommodate the bridge.
Cantilever Dental Bridge
A cantilever bridge consists of a single crown supporting a missing tooth and is used when natural teeth are available only on one side of the gap.
Maryland Dental Bridge
Instead of using crowns, this bridge employs a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth, preserving their structure.
Implant-Supported Bridge
This is the most advanced solution for replacing missing teeth, as it restores both the crown and root structure. The bridge is screwed onto dental implants, leaving adjacent natural teeth untouched, ensuring long-term durability.
TREATMENT STEPS FOR A DENTAL BRIDGE
Evaluation of missing spaces and existing dental structure
Preparation of supporting teeth
Digital scanning for precise alignment
Laboratory fabrication of the bridge
Final bridge placement
FAST INTRAORAL SCANNING
At Miko Dental, we use cutting-edge technology to enhance precision. Our 3D TRIOS intraoral scanner allows us to obtain highly accurate impressions, significantly improving prosthetic restorations compared to traditional methods.
Digital impressions offer optimal accuracy, reducing the need for adjustments. The real-time screen visualisation enables the dentist to make necessary modifications during the scan, ensuring a perfect impression in a single attempt.
This technology facilitates seamless communication between the dentist, patient, and laboratory, delivering outstanding results with superior precision.
REMOVABLE DENTURES
Removable dentures replace missing natural teeth, which may have been lost due to various reasons. The absence of teeth can lead to jawbone issues and shifting of remaining teeth, making them harder to clean.
Modern dentures offer greater flexibility than traditional models, allowing better adaptation to the patient’s gums for a less invasive experience.
TYPES OF REMOVABLE DENTURES
Full Removable Denture
Essential for cases of complete tooth loss, this type replaces an entire dental arch. The upper denture typically includes a palate section for stability, which can be customised via intra-oral scanning.
Skeletal Partial Denture
This partial denture is used when some stable natural teeth remain. It is attached using metal clasps or precision attachments (such as caps) for additional support.
Flexible Silicone Denture
A practical and efficient partial denture featuring a gingival support that does not harm remaining natural teeth. The transparent, aesthetic clasps blend with the gum color, making them virtually invisible.
TREATMENT STEPS FOR A DENTURE
Evaluation of missing teeth and oral conditions
Digital scanning for an exact fit
Extraction of non-restorable teeth
Denture trial fitting
Follow-up adjustments for comfort
With advanced technology and personalised treatment options, Miko Dental ensures high-quality, long-lasting dental restorations tailored to your needs.
